The Newberg Library Foundation is excited to bring The Newberg Story Slam to the community on Saturday, October 24, 2026 (6 pm). This family friendly event will be held at the Newberg High School Auditorium and the public is encouraged to attend. Our Newberg Story Slam is based on The Moth StorySlam, held in major cities including Portland, the event gives community members a chance to tell a true story in front of a live audience based on a theme. The audience selects the winner who told the best story for the evening.
The Newberg Story Slam event is a fundraiser for the Library Foundation of Newberg, which provides annual funding for critical programming that continues to enhance the Newberg Public Library’s ability to provide services to Newberg and Dundee residents. Funds raised with this event will go into the foundation's endowment, created in 1991 by a group of library patrons, who saw the need for a separate fund for the library that would not be commingled with other city funds and available for years to come. The foundation is a 501c (3) tax-exempt charitable foundation and is governed by a volunteer board of directors.
This year’s theme for The Newberg Story Slam will be true humorous stories. There will be two categories - Adult Storytellers and High School
Storytellers. A prize will be awarded to the winner selected by the audience in each category.
Rules
The story must be TRUE
No fiction
It must be ON THEME
The theme for our Story Slam is a humorous story
We want the audience to laugh out loud
It must have STAKES
The story needs action, building upon itself, capturing the audience, so they are caught up in the humor.
It must be YOUR STORY TO TELL
Were you there? Are you the “main character”? Your involvement in the event(s) as they unfolded is essential. No Journalism.
It must be ON TIME
The story should be five minutes long, plus a one minute grace period if needed.
It must be TOLD
Not read from notes or cheat sheets
No rants and No essays
No props and No stand-up comedy routines
Practise that story so you can share it effortlessly
It must demonstrate CIVILITY & RESPECT
No inappropriate language, gestures, or hate speech
No making another person’s identity (class, gender, race, orientation, body type, religion) the story line
Your audience will be families - ready to hear your funny story
